[BEHIND THE OFFICE] HOW POLOCCANS DISCOVERED pt.2

Updated: Sep 2, 2020

In my last journal, you have seen all three alternatives we came up to create the visualization of Poloccans. From a long process, we decided to focus on developing characters with the cylindrical helmet.

+ Detailing

The next step is we want to make sure that our Poloccans could represent the context of our architectural project very well. It is not only about the right size. Human scale actually plays an important role to portray how the architect visualize their final product would be used as a medium of activities. The ideas of creating the right mood and atmosphere for specific function should be easily captured to avoid misunderstanding. Therefore, we sum up with these 4 main considerations.

01. Identity

SB301, as an architectural studio, currently considers building design as our major output. Thinking about giving the character a headpiece to represent the identity, my mind would constantly go towards construction workers, our good buddies in the industry. For safety reason, helmets are frequently used during some construction phases. As graduates proud of their graduation caps, priests appear with their birettas, and the queen shows her status by wearing a crown, let’s show some respect to our fellow construction workers by giving some twists on their symbol of pride.

02. Gender

Biological sex symbol at first are derived from the graphic symbol of Ancient greek astronomy. Mars symbol ♂ is associated with the god of war, resembles a shield and spear. On the other hand, Venus symbol ♀ is associated with Venus, the goddess of beauty resembles a bronze mirror with handle. Then in 1751, Carl Linneaus started to use these symbol to refer men (♂) and women (♀) in biology and botany.

I tried to transform those graphic symbol of men and women into the visual form of the Poloccans helmet. “The arrow” in the male symbol is depicted as the cylindrical protruding part in front of the helmet. For the female character, the front part of the helmet would has a round hole on it.

03. Social Attire

Showing more diversity in each of our characters, they would use different types of attire in different environment based on the context and function of the project. In casual environment, the outfit would be no different than our usual daily garments. For the project where the users tend to behave and dress in more formal attitude, Poloccans would wear their special capes on.

And so, it is all depends on how their activities and movements would be set in a specific scene. Each gesture, angle, how they move and interact would be continuously explored, observed, and developed along our journey in exploring spaces through future projects.
