The Poloccans was one of my earlier projects during my time in SB301 Office. The initial idea was to creating some kind of new visual language for the further SB301 Office visual
representation both for project purpose or social media purpose.
After having some brainstorm-sessions, we came up with the idea of creating a human scale character. Instead of branding each of SB301 Office projects or the office itself, why don’t we just create another universe where all SB301 Office projects (architecture or outside architecture) where live aligned inside this universe.
In this article I will tell you the process behind the making of those Pollocans character from the Polocco planet in sequential timeline based on our design process here in the office.
1st. Attempt
I tried to design any character possibilities that might be able and possible to be produced on a human scale. During the process I put few parameters that might sharpen the way I explore the character like : it has to be effortlessly beautiful, easy in productions, and also not gonna bother the context where it later be used. So I decided to play with the gravity and all the intangible things like windblows. and yes! I tried to explore those human scale possibilities in a scoop of fabrics and sewingy things!.
2nd Attempt
The limitations in the ease of production turned out became of my obstacle when I tried to develop this character. After few discussions with the team, we decided to take out all the elements that we thought unnecessary and complicating the production stage. After that I'm moving forward, exploring deeper the character and iterating a lot new possibilities.
3rd Attempt
In the further development, we put another parameter like : what will happened if we
produce the character in real life? how it will be stored when it not in use?. And then we
reduced the character constume element to make it simpler until we agreed to only develop
the head (helmet) for the next development.
The Results
After iterating more possibilities thru the head of our future poloccans, we decided to pick up the cylindrical shape option with a rounded end. The frontside cylinder hole designed in order to give a sign direction where the poloccan’s face is pointing / seeing.
